What is autistic masking or camouflaging?

Masking (camouflaging) is hiding autistic responses and performing non-autistic ones — holding your face in the right shape, forcing eye contact, running social scripts, pushing through overload. Research describes three strategies: compensation (learned scripts), masking (real-time self-monitoring), and assimilation (blending in to survive a room). For many autistic women it starts in early childhood and becomes automatic.

Why is masking so exhausting for autistic women?

Masking is a second job performed at the same time as everything else — a continuous self-monitoring process running like a hidden background app. Research links heavy camouflaging to exhaustion, anxiety, depression, delayed diagnosis, and identity confusion, and one study found camouflaging was a risk marker for suicidality unique to autistic adults.

Is masking bad? Should I stop masking?

Accepted Answer

Masking is an intelligent adaptation and often a survival skill — nothing to be ashamed of. The question that matters is whether it's chosen code-switching you can take off, or compulsory self-erasure that never comes off anywhere. Unmasking, done gradually and safely where it's genuinely safe, is its own skill — Module 12 of this course is devoted to it.
